What separates you and a corpse? Life! Life is only transmitted from the brainstem to the body and brain. Just as tying a string around the aorta would adversely affect function of the heart, putting pressure on the brain stem area will absolutely adversely affect body and brain function. Here is an atlas adjustment demonstration. This is such an important area, that some chiropractors choose to solely focus on this spinal bone!
This is an example of a patient described pre-post symptom sheet.
When setting the atlas, it’s essential not to put too much lateral flexion into the neck that will get the patient uncomfortable. Once the contact is made, you should just allow the patient to let their head fall over your contact hand. At that point, you may add just a slight bit of rotation/flexion and set the vertebrae. Notice in this case there were two thrusts. The first thrust was very very slow and gentle. Not all of the slack was out. When the atlas was set, it was still very gentle, just there was more slack out.
NOTE: You can always bust thru slack with speed and force, but this is very uncomfortable to the patient and the vertebrae will only set when all the slack is out anyway. If you focus on taking out the slack as Dr. Gohl advised, the thrust is very insignificant.
Everything I ever learned about adjusting is from my mentor Dr. Gohl. You can find his products at www.gohlchiropractic.com. The site is run by his daughter who put together all his material in a teachable fashion. His work represents the definitive work on chiropractic and it’s essential for everyone to know, especially those interested in the Gonstead system.
